About product

A German sniper of the First World War, 1:35 scale, number 1

A resin figure from the Czech maker Black Dog out of its range of First World War infantry. The 1:35 scale is the most widespread format for dioramas with ground equipment, so the figure can be combined with models of vehicles, guns and with terrain bases. It is supplied unpainted and unassembled, as a raw casting with casting blocks.

The real subject

In the trench warfare of the years 1914 to 1918 snipers became a specialization of their own. They were equipped with a repeating rifle fitted with a telescopic sight, that is with a weapon that differed from standard infantry armament only in the addition of the sight. The gear is characteristic too: a helmet, ammunition pouches and camouflage elements meant to hide the observer in the terrain or in the wall of a trench. It is precisely those details that make the figure recognizable at first glance.

Building and painting tips

Wash the casting in lukewarm water with dish soap and cut the casting blocks off with a thin saw. Sand the parting seams wet; dry sanding raises dust that is harmful to health. After the primer, start with the face, because that is what decides the final impression; build it up from thin coats, from a darker base to the lighter areas of the forehead, the nose and the cheekbones. Paint the uniform so that the cloth does not look like plastic: a base shade, a dark wash into the folds and a dry brush on the edges. Set the rifle apart in shades of wood and metal, and matte clear at the end will unify the surface except for the metal parts.

Who the figure is for

  • builders of dioramas from the period of the First World War
  • modelers working with infantry figures in 1:35 scale
  • anyone interested in the gear and armament of the years 1914 to 1918
  • those who want to bring a vehicle model to life with a human figure

The figure is supplied unpainted, as a resin casting. Paints, glue and a base are not included in the package.

FAQ

To the years of the First World War, that is 1914 to 1918. The gear differs from later periods.

It is not, it is cast in resin. The detail is finer, but it is glued with superglue and has to be washed before painting.

This is a resin casting; with figures of this range the body tends to be cast in one piece and the small parts separately. The exact number of parts is given on the packaging.

Yes, the 1:35 scale is the standard for dioramas with ground equipment.
