About product

1:35 Gothic church windows No.2 - a Gothic church window for a diorama

This part is not a model of a church and not a kit of a building. It is a diorama accessory: a window element in 1:35 scale, which you seat into the wall of a set piece. According to the name this is version number 2 from the numbered range of Gothic church windows from RT-Diorama. The number of pieces in the package is stated on the box of the set.

The real subject

You will know a Gothic window by its pointed arch and its division by stone tracery, which carries the stained glass. From the thirteenth century cathedrals, city parish churches and monastery churches were built this way all over Europe, so the real subject fits scenes from France, Germany, the Netherlands and central Europe. For a diorama it is a rewarding element: a tall narrow window settles at once what sort of building this is and gives a scene its scale and the vertical that low equipment lacks.

Installation and painting tips

  • Seat the window so that the bottom edge matches sacred architecture - it tends to be higher than on a dwelling house, well above the head of a standing figure.
  • Make good the joint around the frame with filler and repeat the texture of the surrounding masonry on it, or the element will stand out from the area.
  • The stone reveal looks best when you break the base tone with several close shades and run a darker wash into the hollows.
  • You will manage colored stained glass by applying transparent paints to a clear film from behind and painting in the lead bars with a fine brush.

Who the set is for

For modelers who build the structures for their dioramas in 1:35 out of individual architectural elements and are looking for a faithful sacred window. The numbered versions of the same range can be combined in one facade, so a whole side wall of a church nave can be built.

FAQ

No. This is a window element, which is seated into the wall of a set piece. The set does not contain the walls, the roof or a base.

The number of pieces is stated on the box of the set. With other versions of the same range the number is also stated in the name, in brackets after the number.

A Gothic one has a pointed arch drawn up to a point and tends to be tall and narrow. A Romanesque one has a semicircular arch and the opening is lower and wider.

The simplest road is a clear film painted from behind with transparent paints; the bars are painted in with a fine brush once it has dried.
