About product

Type 60 of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force: photo-etched parts 1:35 (FineMolds)

A set of photo-etched parts, not a model of a vehicle. On a single photo-etched fret measuring roughly 115 by 65 millimeters there are thin metal parts that always come out coarser in plastic than they ought to be: grilles, brackets, eyes, loops and other small items for a model of the Type 60 self-propelled recoilless gun carrier in 1:35 scale. The set is intended for the plastic kit of this vehicle in the same scale and it replaces or supplements its parts. It is made by the Japanese company FineMolds, known for accurate molds and fine photo-etching.

The real subject

The Type 60 is a light Japanese tracked vehicle of the late 1950s, armed with a pair of 106 mm recoilless guns on an elevating mount on the right-hand side of the hull. It was an anti-tank weapon of the Ground Self-Defense Force intended for firing from cover: the vehicle stayed hidden behind a fold in the ground and raised the mount with the barrels only for the time needed to aim and fire. A small silhouette, low weight and the gunner's open position are typical of the machine and make it a rewarding subject for a diorama. It stayed in service until the beginning of the twenty-first century.

Building and painting tips

Cut the parts off on a hard surface with a sharp knife or with special photo-etch scissors, and never break them out by twisting. Make the bends in a bending tool or between two razor blades, and on larger parts anneal the sheet over a flame beforehand, because it will soften and stop springing back. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue applied in a minute amount, for instance with a pin. Degrease the metal with alcohol before painting and apply a primer meant for metal, otherwise the paint will flake off during handling. The engraved grilles come out if you emphasize them after the base coat with a dark wash and fine drybrushing.

Who the set is for

  • builders of Japanese postwar equipment in 1:35 scale
  • modelers who want to replace coarse plastic grilles and brackets
  • those who already have experience of bending and gluing photo-etched parts
  • anyone after a competition level of finish on a model

The set is supplied unpainted and without the base kit. Glue, paints and other accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
