A model of the Mk 45 Mod 4 naval gun mount of 127 mm caliber in the Japanese rendition, 1:35 scale. The gun armament of a modern destroyer as a display-case piece in its own right.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Mk 45 mount arose as a lightweight naval weapon of 127 mm caliber and spread beyond the US Navy as well. The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force carries it on its newer destroyers, and the JMSDF label in the name points to exactly this service. The Mod 4 version differs from the older ones in a longer barrel of 62 calibers and in a shield with faceted sloping walls, which reduces the reflection of a radar signal. The weapon works with its crew below deck; nobody stays inside the shield during firing. It is used against surface targets and for the support of units ashore.
In 1:35 scale the mount comes out as a full model in its own right. What stands out on it are the shape of the shield, its gaps and hatches and the seating of the barrel, that is details that disappear on a model of a whole ship. The model suits a base with a caption just as well as a display case beside hardware in other scales.
Wash the parts and degrease them before painting, because the large smooth surfaces of the shield will reveal every greasy fingerprint. Cut the excess material away with a sharp blade a little way from the part and sand the rest off; check the building sequence in the manufacturer's instructions. Japanese ships wear a lighter gray finish, so it pays to work with a fine difference of shades: brighten the upper surfaces a little, lay a dark wash into the gaps and draw the edges out carefully. Keep the barrel smooth; the traces of service belong rather at the foot of the mount.
For modelers of ships and for collectors of modern naval armament who will appreciate a striking piece outside the usual naval scales. Paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
