The twenty-liter sheet metal container held on in armies for whole decades after the war, because nobody could offer anything better. Only from the 1970s did pressed plastic containers start to push it out, lighter, non-corroding and simpler to produce. In many armies both generations therefore stand side by side today: the metal one with older vehicles and reserve supplies, the plastic one with new equipment.
The most important difference with present-day containers is not the shape but telling the contents apart. Mixing up fuel and drinking water is dangerous, and that is why the containers differ in color, in the shape of the cap and in the molded lettering on the side. Water jerrycans tend to be lighter or white, fuel ones keep the dark shade of the vehicle. On a model it is the detail that reveals at once whether the builder really studied the real subject.
Modern equipment carries the containers in brackets at the rear or on the fenders, strapped down with a buckled strap. Scuffs form around the bracket, and on a real vehicle that is the most conspicuous place of wear. Containers in a bracket never sit perfectly straight and their color differs slightly from the vehicle, because they come from a different production batch.
A metal container wears down to bright metal and rusts in dents, while a plastic one fades to a lighter shade and the scuff has a white character. This difference is worth playing, because both generations tend to be on one scene at the same time.
