An injection-molded plastic kit of the South Korean K1A1 main battle tank in 1:35 scale from Trumpeter. The model captures the angular welded turret with its long 120 mm gun, the hull with hydropneumatic suspension and the running gear. The box contains gray plastic on several sprues, a decal sheet and tracks; the exact numbers of parts and schemes differ between editions.
The K1A1 is the upgraded version of the South Korean K1 main battle tank. The fundamental change compared with the original vehicle is the replacement of the 105 mm gun by a more powerful 120 mm smoothbore gun, together with a new fire control system. In design the tank follows the American school and it carries composite armor; the hydropneumatic suspension allows it to change the tilt of the hull in the mountainous terrain of the Korean peninsula. The K1A1 forms the core of the armored forces of the South Korean army.
Finish the running gear, the wheels and the tracks first, because once the side skirts of the hull are fitted they are harder to reach. Separate the parts from the sprues with a sharp knife and sand the areas left by the sprue gates. Spray the model with a primer and then with the base color; South Korean vehicles usually carry an olive green finish or a multi-color camouflage. Bring out the engraving and the hatches with a dark wash and complete the lower areas and the running gear with dust and mud pigments for realistic weathering.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
