Accessories for the M4 mortar carrier

The set extends a model of the American M4 mortar carrier in 1:35. The number two in the name tells the individual sets within the same range apart, so they do not rule each other out and can be used alongside one another on a single model.

The real subject

The M4 carrier came about by converting an armored half-track into a self-propelled carrier for an 81 mm mortar. The weapon was mounted directly in the hull and in this form it pointed toward the rear of the vehicle; only a later type received a forward-firing mortar. Besides the mortar itself the hull carried a supply of ammunition, the crew and their kit, so it was practically never empty. That is exactly why a mortar carrier is a rewarding subject: the more there is to see in the hull, the more alive the whole model looks.

Building and painting tips

• Wash the parts in lukewarm water with a drop of detergent before gluing and let them dry properly.
• Cut the excess material off a little way from the part with a sharp blade and carefully sand what remains.
• Try the arrangement in the hull out dry before you reach for the glue.
• The manufacturer's instructions give the right glue for the material used.
• A base coat will help the paint hold and will also reveal any spots that were not sanded enough.
