About product

Stowage and equipment for the M3A1 Scout Car, British version, 1:35, PANZER ART

A resin set of stowage and stowed equipment for a model of the American M3A1 Scout Car reconnaissance armored car in the form used by the British Army. It is not a kit of the vehicle but an accessory to a finished model in 1:35 scale. The castings are shaped to seat into the body and on its edges, and they complete the vehicle with the things a crew really carried with them — rolled tarpaulins, bags, crates and small equipment.

The real subject

The M3A1 Scout Car is an American light armored car with four-wheel drive, an open body and a characteristic roller in front of the radiator that helped the vehicle over breaks in the ground. It was built in great numbers and besides the American army it was used under wartime aid by the Allies as well, including British and Dominion units. The open body means that the inside of the vehicle is visible on a model, and also that equipment piled up in it during service. The British form differed from the American one precisely in the range of stowed items — different bags, different crates, a different way of lashing — and that is the distinguishing feature of this set.

Building and painting tips

Wash the parts in lukewarm water with dish soap, cut the casting blocks off with a fine-bladed saw and level the surfaces with a file. Sand with your airways protected, glue with super glue and apply a primer before painting. Arrange the layout dry before you glue anything on — on an open body what stays visible is what matters. It pays to paint separately: spray the base of the vehicle first, prepare the stowage apart and glue it on only once dry. Lighten the textiles with a dry brush on the edges of the folds, treat the wood with a glaze along the grain and damp the metal down with a dark wash. A matte varnish and a light dusting with pigments unify the whole.

Who the set is for

  • For modelers who build the M3A1 Scout Car in 1:35 scale with an open body.
  • For anyone interested in British and Dominion vehicles of the Second World War.
  • For builders of dioramas who want to settle a vehicle in with equipment.
  • For those who enjoy combining the painting of textile, wood and metal on a small area.

The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. It is a resin accessory to an already built model of the M3A1 Scout Car in 1:35 scale. The kit of the vehicle has to be obtained separately.

The range of stowed equipment matches British use of the vehicle. The set thereby comes about as a variant different from the form with American equipment.

It pays to paint separately — the vehicle and the stowage apart — and to glue them together once dry. Lighten the textiles with a dry brush, treat the wood with a glaze and damp the metal down with a dark wash.

The exact make-up is not stated here. You will find it on the box of the set.
