Twenty-three manhole covers in 1:35 scale. They are set into a roadway or a sidewalk and give a scene an urban character.

A cast-iron circle in paving is among the small things a viewer registers before having time to name them. Without it a street looks like an area of color; with it, immediately like an inhabited place with sewerage, a water main and a gas main underfoot. The package brings twenty-three of them, which is enough for a longer stretch of roadway and for a crossroads as well.
A cover sixty-five centimeters across measures just under two centimeters in 1:35 scale. It is fitted sunk in: a shallow hollow is taken out of the base, the piece is glued into it and the gap is filled so that the edge of the roadway runs on smoothly. A cover standing proud looks false, because real frames are level with the surface so that wheels can drive over them.
Cast iron has a dark, rather brown-gray tone with a hint of rust, not a black color. The pattern on the upper surface tends to be smoothed by tires, whereas deposits hold in the hollows. That is most easily achieved by letting a dark shade soak into the grooves and then wiping the raised edges. If asphalt runs around it, a thin patch of a different shade often appears between the frame and the surface.
The set goes well with the other street elements from the same maker, from hydrants to street lighting, with which it forms the complete equipment of one street.
It is a good idea to plan the placement out on paper in advance. The covers do not lie at random; they follow the route of the piping, appear at regular intervals along the curb and gather at the crossing of streets, not in the middle of an open area.
