An injection-molded plastic model of the German self-propelled siege mortar Mörser Karl (Karl-Gerät) 040/041 in 1:35 scale from the Trumpeter brand. It is an exceptionally large and richly equipped kit: it makes it possible to build the early and the late form of the chassis, each in the transport or the firing position, it offers both barrels (the 040 version and the longer 041), photo-etched metal, metal axles and springs, two metal shells and several finely worked crew figures. The exact number of parts is given in the instructions enclosed.
The Mörser Karl was one of the largest self-propelled siege mortars of the Second World War. Its caliber ran to tens of centimeters (the 040 version with the coarser barrel, the 041 version with a longer barrel of smaller caliber), so it fired concrete-piercing and armor-piercing projectiles weighing over a ton to a short but devastating range. Because of its enormous weight it was moved over long distances by rail. It served to bombard heavily fortified targets. It is precisely its proportions and its size that make the model a striking piece for a collection.
With an assembly this large and intricate it pays to build and paint the running gear, the wheels and the tracks before the hull is closed up. Glue the plastic parts with liquid modeling cement for plastic and the photo-etched and metal parts with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). Apply a primer before painting and spray the paint with an airbrush in thin coats. A large format shows beautifully with edge highlighting using a dry brush, dark washes in the recesses and pigments for dust and mud effects; the crew figures give the model a sense of scale.
