A precisely turned metal barrel in 1:35 scale from the manufacturer Voyager Model, intended as a replacement for the plastic barrel on a model of the Chinese main battle tank Type 59D. It is not a kit or a photo-etched set, but a single accurate part that replaces the most conspicuous component of a model. The dimensions of the barrel match the Hobby Boss 84541 kit.
The Type 59 was a Chinese medium tank based on a Soviet design, and for decades it was the backbone of the armored forces. The Type 59D form is among the modernizations that received a more powerful gun, add-on armor and a better fire control system. On a tank the barrel is the element a viewer notices first, and both its shape and its slenderness strongly determine the impression the whole model makes.
Turned metal has three advantages over plastic: it has no parting seams, it is perfectly straight and the muzzle is genuinely drilled, so there is no laborious drilling and cleaning up to do. The procedure is simple. Cut the plastic barrel off where it enters the turret or the mantlet, level the surface and carefully widen the hole as needed, so that the metal part slips in without force. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue, and with a larger gap a two-part epoxy glue helps, as it fills the play and holds more firmly. Check the alignment against the turret before gluing; once it has dried there is nothing to be done about it. Degrease the metal surface with alcohol and spray on a primer intended for metal, otherwise the paint on the barrel will rub off at every handling.
It is an accessory part, not a kit. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
