About product

Photo-etched set for the MAZ with the ChMZAP-5247G semi-trailer in 1:35 scale

This aftermarket set from Voyager Model holds brass photo-etched parts for a model of the Soviet heavy tractor with the ChMZAP-5247G lowboy semi-trailer. It is not a kit of the vehicle but a detail accessory meant for the Trumpeter 00211/00212 plastic model.

The real subject

The combination of the heavy eight-wheeled MAZ-537 series tractor and the ChMZAP-5247G semi-trailer served to carry tanks and other heavy tracked vehicles on the road and across country. The tractor was driven by a powerful diesel engine derived from tank practice, and the whole combination was among the heaviest wheeled vehicles of its day. The semi-trailer has a large platform with side frames, ramp features and a dense structure of sheet and mesh, which is exactly what gets simplified most in plastic.

Flatness of the long parts

On a combination with a long platform it is essential to keep the photo-etched strips flat. Never cut long parts out with scissors, which will ripple them; separate them with a scalpel against a hard surface or with photo-etch nippers. Make the bends in a bending tool or between two steel rulers, always along the whole length at once rather than in sections. Before gluing, lay the part on dry, check that it seats along its whole length and fix it gradually in short stretches, so that the glue does not grab before the part is straight. Brass that has twisted during cutting can often be saved by smoothing it between sheets of hard paper under a steel ruler.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of heavy haulage and transport subjects in 1:35 scale
  • Modelers building a diorama with a tracked vehicle being transported
  • More experienced builders used to working with photo-etched parts and a bending tool
  • Collectors bothered by simplified sheet-metal areas on a model

This is an add-on set for a model. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package.

FAQ

No. This is a photo-etched accessory. The plastic kit of the combination has to be bought separately.

For the particular Trumpeter 00211/00212 plastic kit. Using it on another model calls for modifications.

Separate them with a scalpel against a hard surface, bend them in a bending tool along the whole length at once, and check the fit dry before gluing.

Rather not. Working with long photo-etched parts calls for a bending tool and experience of dispensing cyanoacrylate.
