The set is not a kit; it is built onto a plastic model you have already bought and assumes experience with assembling metal parts. The T-80U is among the modernized forms of the T-80 series, the only series-produced tank of its generation powered by a gas turbine. The main weapon is a 125 mm smoothbore gun completed by an autoloader, and protection is raised by explosive reactive armor on the front of the hull and the turret. The long slender barrel with its thermal sleeve is typical of the machine's silhouette, and that is why it shows so much on a model whether it is plastic with a glue seam or metal.
A metal barrel has two advantages over a plastic one: it has no longitudinal seam that has to be filled and sanded, and the muzzle is drilled, so it looks genuinely thin-walled. It is usually seated into a modified plastic turret; make the joint with superglue or with a two-part adhesive that gives time to line the axis up. Before painting, degrease both the barrel and the photo-etch and lay on a primer for metal. The thermal sleeve of the barrel on the subject tends to be flatter than the surrounding surfaces, which can be achieved with an overspray of matte clear. Glue the photo-etched parts on only after the plastic seams have been sanded, so that the small elements are not damaged.
The add-on set is supplied unpainted, with no glue and no base kit. Verify before buying that the set matches the kit you own.
