A masking sheet meant to separate the rubber tire band on the road wheel from the rim during painting. It is neither a model nor a part for a kit, but an aid for the painting stage. The cutouts are cut for the wheels from the kit of the SAM 6 self-propelled anti-aircraft missile system by Trumpeter, which rides on a tracked chassis.
Whether the border comes out sharp often depends more on the thinner than on the mask itself. Thinly thinned paint runs and finds its way, so it works under the edge of a mask more easily, especially when it goes on as a single wet coat. Paint thinned only lightly covers in fewer passes and tends to dry at the edge of the mask rather than creep beneath it. The second issue is chemistry: an aggressive lacquer thinner can swell or soften the adhesive layer of a mask, and the mask then stops sealing, or leaves a sticky residue behind. Water-thinnable acrylics tend to be more forgiving in this respect. The practical conclusion is simple. Keep the thinning at the lower end of what is recommended for your type of paint, spray several thin passes instead of one generous one, and with lacquer paints do not leave the mask on the model longer than necessary. Always choose the particular thinner according to the paint manufacturer and not out of habit, because acrylics, enamels and lacquers cannot be thinned with one another.
Clear the wheels of seams, degrease them, paint the rim and mask once it has dried. Spray the tire band in thin coats at lower pressure and take the mask off while the paint has flashed off.
