About product

Eduard TFace masking set 1:32, Supermarine Spitfire Mk.I

This is an add-on to a kit, not an airplane model. The TFace designation at Eduard means that the set contains masks for both sides of the glazing, outer and inner. The cockpit frame can thus be sprayed from the outside in the airframe color and from the inside in the interior shade, which in the large 1:32 scale shows at first glance: a single layer of paint no longer shows through the clear part and the frame looks like a real structure. The basic variant of the set without TFace, which masks only from the outside, exists as a separate item.

The masks are machine-cut to the shape of the parts, so cutting strips out of masking tape by hand is no longer needed. On the glazing of the Spitfire, which consists of several divided sections, that saves a large part of the work.

The real subject

The Supermarine Spitfire Mk.I was the first production version of the British single-seat fighter with its characteristic elliptical wing and the liquid-cooled Rolls-Royce Merlin V12 engine. Early machines are recognized by the simpler shape of the cockpit canopy and by details of the propeller and the exhausts, which changed during production. The extensive glazing is one of the most laborious parts of the build on this type.

Usage tips

First wash the clear part in lukewarm water with detergent and let it dry completely. Start with the inner masks and spray the interior shade, and only then apply the outer masks and spray the airframe color. Carry the masks with tweezers and press them down with a toothpick, above all in the corners. Spray several thin coats; one heavy coat will run under the edge. Take the mask off while the coat is only just set: on fully cured paint the edge tears more easily. If a small seepage does appear, put it right by scratching with a toothpick, not with thinner.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of the Spitfire Mk.I in 1:32 scale
  • Modelers who build a model with the cockpit open
  • Those who are bothered by a frame showing through clear from the inside
  • Competition modelers, for whom the cleanliness of masking is judged

The set contains painting masks only. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package.

FAQ

The set contains masks for both sides of the glazing. You can thus spray the cockpit frame from the outside in the airframe color and from the inside in the interior shade.

If you are building a model with the cockpit open, or if a frame showing through clear from the inside bothers you, yes. With the cockpit closed the basic variant is enough.

First the inner masks and the coat of the interior shade, and once dry the outer masks and the airframe color.

No. It is a masking set for a kit in 1:32 scale you have already bought; the model is not included in the package.
