The maintenance crews of German half-track vehicles hated the system of overlapping wheels for good reason. The solution did spread the weight over a large area and granted the crew a surprisingly smooth ride, except that to change a single damaged disk it was necessary to take off those that overlapped it as well. In the Russian mud a mass packed itself between the wheels which froze overnight and in the morning could stop a vehicle sooner than the enemy. The arrangement was not abandoned all the same, because nothing else at that time would carry the growing weight of the hull.
Among the late renderings of the hub cover the manufacturer distinguishes two forms, and this set corresponds to the earlier of them. The difference is small, but clearly apparent on a model at this scale, and builders who work from a particular period photograph will appreciate it.
The castings have their edges preserved even in places where a plastic part loses its sharpness because of the ejector. The set is designed for the kit of the Academy brand and reckons with its arms unchanged. The best result is given by a procedure in which all the wheels are first fitted loosely, the plane in which they sit down on the base is leveled, and only then are they fixed one by one. The rows then do not go out of true and the model will stand straight in the display case.
In a scene with a muddy road it is the chassis that makes most of the impression. The castings will take careful sanding of the lower edge, by which the sagging under the weight of the machine is suggested, and they hold the texture of the mass packed between the disks better than smooth plastic. Anyone putting together a vehicle parked in a winter landscape will appreciate that the gaps between the rows stay open and a brush can be got into them right to the bottom.
