About product

Photo-etched ammunition boxes for the Nashorn in 1:35 scale

A specialized set of photo-etched parts from the Czech manufacturer Eduard, focused on the boxes and bins for the ammunition of the German Nashorn tank destroyer in 1:35 scale. It is neither a kit of the vehicle nor a complete detail set for the whole model, but a targeted accessory that is folded up from thin metal sheet and fitted onto the base plastic model. Check the exact extent of the set and the number of parts on the box.

Why it pays off

The 88 mm ammunition on the Nashorn was stowed in boxes and bins arranged around the open fighting superstructure, which is clearly visible on a finished model. Injection-molded plastic manages these thin-walled bins only roughly, because it cannot faithfully render the thickness of the material, the hinged lids or the handles. Photo-etched sheet, by contrast, allows the boxes to be built from genuinely thin walls and if you wish to be shown open as well, which brings the interior of the superstructure markedly to life.

The real subject

The Nashorn, with the designation Sd.Kfz.164, was a German tank destroyer introduced in 1943 on a chassis derived from the Panzer III and Panzer IV tanks. Its long 88 mm antitank gun made it a dangerous opponent at long range, but the open superstructure gave the crew only limited protection. That is exactly why the interior of the superstructure including the ammunition stowage is so prominent on a model.

Usage tips

Separate the parts with a sharp scalpel on a hard surface, bend them in a photo-etch bender or between two razor blades and glue them with super glue. With the boxes it is best to fold and glue the whole shape, checked dry on the bench, and only then seat it in the model. Degrease the sheet before painting and go over it with primer, otherwise the paint will not hold on smooth metal. Finish and paint the superstructure and the ammunition stowage before you close the model up and fit a crew.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who build the Nashorn with an open and visible superstructure
  • Anyone interested in the maximum detail of the interior and the ammunition stowage
  • More experienced builders with experience of photo-etched sheet
  • Competition modelers and builders of dioramas

FAQ

No. It is an accessory focused on the boxes and bins for ammunition; the base plastic Nashorn kit has to be bought separately.

It will not. It is a targeted accessory that complements the full set rather than standing in for it.

With super glue, ideally the gel kind, which gives you time to fine-tune the position. Cement for plastic will not hold on metal.

Check the exact number of parts on the box.
