Not every display case will take a sprawling scene. The smaller form of the column base from the Black Dog brand is the answer to the situation where you want to give a figure a setting but have nowhere to put a large diorama. In 1:35 scale a compact whole thus comes about that fits on an ordinary shelf and among other models.
A compact scene has the advantage that it can be finished over a weekend. The slow business of covering large areas falls away and the modeler can concentrate on what matters, that is on the quality of the painting of one figure and its immediate surroundings. A smaller base is also easier to carry to competitions and easier to photograph, because the background can be screened off without trouble.
With a small scene the rule is that less is more. Choose one dominant color accent, warm stone for instance, and keep the rest in a muted register, so that the eye does not wander. Paint the detail bearing in mind that the viewer will come closer to the model than with a large diorama, so coarse transitions would show at once. Dose the patina with restraint; a heavy deposit would take over a small area.
