A scenic base with the motif of a stone staircase with a column. Stairs are among the elements modelers reach for deliberately, because the steps automatically divide a composition into several levels of height and a figure on them looks more interesting than on a flat surface.
A difference in height is the simplest way to bring dynamism into a diorama. A figure on a step gains a natural stance, a model placed below the staircase looks larger, and the whole gains depth without a single further accessory. The column beside the stairs adds a vertical line to the scene and, together with the steps, marks out the space the composition can be laid out in. And the motif is not tied to any particular country or era.
Build the stone by layering, not with one coat. First a mid tone, then dark accents into the joints, and finally a dry brush over the edges of the steps, where stone would naturally wear. Keep the horizontal surfaces of the steps lighter and the vertical sides darker; that separates the steps to the eye. Concentrate the dust and the fine dirt in the corners and at the foot of the column, not evenly over the whole surface.
