A figure of an assault infantryman with a Pecheneg machine gun in 1:35 scale. An accessory for scenes of contemporary ground equipment, where equipment is to be scarce and action plentiful.
Responsibility details are not available.
The weapon the figure is named after is the Pecheneg general-purpose machine gun of 7.62 mm caliber for the 54R cartridge. It came about in the 1990s at the design institute in Klimovsk as a reworking of the proven PKM machine gun, and from 1999 it gradually replaced the older pieces in the Russian army. The main difference lies in the non-replaceable, markedly heavier barrel, cooled by a stream of air drawn through the shroud above it.
It is precisely that which gives the weapon an unmistakable silhouette: a long ribbed barrel shroud ending in a flared mouth and a carrying handle moved well forward. Modelers notice it, because by these two features a figure can be told at first glance from older machine gunners with the classic PKM.
A machine gunner figure comes into its own at a moment of movement, that is while running between positions or while taking up a firing position. The base then does not have to be large; a piece of broken paving or a grassy slope is enough. It pays to add a belt of ammunition to the weapon, worked from thin wire or from photo-etched parts, if the set does not contain one itself.
A contemporary field uniform suits muted painting without sharp transitions and rather a fine accentuation of the edges than bold shading. The equipment carried on the body, by contrast, is best distinguished slightly in color, so that the figure does not turn into a uniform blur.
The origin of the weapon's name is worth a mention too. The Pechenegs were a nomadic tribe that threatened Kievan Rus in the tenth and eleventh centuries, so the designation fits the custom of naming Russian armament after historical opponents or after animals. For a modeler it is a small thing, but it comes in handy when writing a label for a finished case.
