Pre-cut masks for painting the wheels of the T-34 tank. They cover the rubber tire band and leave the rim free, so both parts can be sprayed separately and with no lining by hand. The set is cut for the T-34 kit from Border Model — it follows the shape and diameter of the wheels of that kit.
The T-34 carries five large road wheels on each side, set far apart, sprung on vertical springs inside the hull. Return rollers are missing entirely; the upper run of the track bears on the wheels themselves. Thanks to the large diameter and the wide gaps the running gear of the T-34 is far more open than on German machines with interleaved wheels and is visible from every angle, the inner faces included. Production variants also differ in the type of wheel: alongside the classic wheel with a rubber tire band, all-steel wheels with internal springing were used, on which no tire band is painted. Before masking, therefore, it pays to look at which type of wheel your kit contains — the masks make sense on wheels with a rubber tire band.
Bleeding on a T-34 does not arise from a complicated shape but from the size of the surfaces: spraying a large wheel tempts you into a heavy coat, and that gets under the edge of a mask easily. Hold the airbrush square to the face of the wheel rather than at an angle, and apply several thin coats rather than one generous one. Before sticking the masks down, wash and degrease the parts, so a mask seats directly on the surface and not on a film of grease. It is also practical to paint the wheels before fitting them to the hull, while they can be turned freely and a mask can be laid on precisely.
Paints, glue and the kit are not included in the package.
