A set of decals in 1:35 scale from Star Decals, tied to the armed conflict in eastern Ukraine. Three types of equipment the set aims at are named in the name: the BMP-2 infantry fighting vehicle, the BMD-1 airborne vehicle and the JS-3 heavy tank. The markings concern the equipment of both sides.
The BMP-2 is a tracked infantry fighting vehicle with a small two-seat turret and a rapid-fire 30 mm cannon; it carries a squad of infantry and at the same time provides it with fire support. The BMD-1 is its airborne counterpart: markedly lighter, with a low silhouette and built so that it can be dropped or landed from an aircraft. The JS-3, by contrast, is a heavy tank from the end of the Second World War with a characteristic rounded turret and a sloping hull front, which found its way into modern fighting by way of surviving examples. It is precisely such a spread of generations that makes the theme an unusual one to build.
Tactical insignia in modern conflicts tend to be applied in a hurry and often freehand, so a perfectly straight and sharp marking looks out of place. Place a decal slightly off center, then, matte it down once it has dried and go over it gently with a pigment. On vehicles with aluminum and steel surfaces it looks good when the dust holds in the welds and the corners. Always take the application onto a gloss base and add the layer of mud only at the end.
