A figure of an American soldier on foot patrol from Black Dog model. The designation No. 1 in the name sets it apart from the second pose of the same pair, so both can be bought separately or together. It brings into a modern diorama what hardware on its own cannot manage, a human scale and a legible direction of movement.
It works best at the edge of a dusty road, at a low wall or between parked vehicles. It pays to offset it from the axis of the hardware: between the vehicle, the figure and a terrain element a triangle arises along which the viewer's eye travels through the scene. If you aim the figure's gaze out of the base, the scene looks as though it continued beyond its edge.
First degrease the surface and cover it with a thin undercoat so that the later coats hold. Desert shades come out best when you work from a darker base toward lighter edges, a more saturated tone into the folds and a brightened one on the shoulders, knees and upper surfaces of the equipment. Leave the face for the end and work on it in good light. Finally dust the boots and the bottoms of the trouser legs with pigment in the tone of the terrain; the figure then merges visually with the groundwork and does not look as though it were merely standing on it.
