1:35 U.S.M.C. (1)

The real subject

The subject is the US Marine Corps. The corps has a tradition of its own and a style of kit of its own, so figures in this rig look different in a scene from soldiers of the land army and come into their own best beside equipment that the Marine Corps used. The number in brackets sets the individual items within the range apart, a range in which more subjects in the same scale are coming out one after another.

What a figure does to a model

A figure by a vehicle or in a diorama gives a scene scale and action. An adult soldier measures roughly five centimeters in 1:35 scale, so the cut of the uniform, the kit and the carriage of the body can all be seen. From the figure the viewer immediately estimates the size of the machine it stands beside, which a model on its own without a figure will never show. How many figures the package holds and in what poses is given in the manufacturer's instructions and on the packaging.

Building and painting tips

• Try the placement of the figures out dry and watch where each figure is looking as you do so.
• Cut surplus material off with a sharp blade a little way from the part and sand the surface.
• Before painting, wash the parts in lukewarm water with detergent and let them dry off.
• Paint the head and the hands separately and attach them only at the end.
• Paint in thin coats and pick the folds out with a darker glaze.
• Glue suitable for the material used is given in the manufacturer's instructions.
