A water tower is a scenic accessory, not a kit of equipment. The real subject is a raised water tank of the kind that stood by railway stations, farms, sugar refineries and barracks and that supplied a whole site with water. For a diorama in 1:35 it is an unusually tall element, which changes the whole view of a scene.
Most dioramas take place at ground level. A tower breaks this habit: it draws the eye upward, covers a dull background and at the same time offers room for an observer, for a tank torn away by a hit or for the laundry of the garrison hung out. It also works well as a landmark, which tells the viewer that the scene takes place on the edge of a village, not in the middle of a field.
The key is water. Under the overflow and at the joints let dark running stains flow down, around the foot of the structure suggest permanently damp ground and let the tank look older than the rest of the building. Lead the rust from the top down in narrow strips, not over the whole area – rust over a whole area looks like a painted surface. Separate the brickwork and the metal in color, otherwise the building will merge into a single tone.
