A photo-etched set in 1:35 scale from the Chinese manufacturer Voyager Model for the British Churchill Mk.IV infantry tank. With this manufacturer the Basic designation means the basic scope: the set covers the main external details, the ones photo-etched parts pay off on most, without the full extension of an interior or turned parts. The kit the set is cut for has to be bought separately; the model is not part of the package.
The Churchill was a British infantry tank designed to accompany infantry, that is for a slow advance in direct support rather than for rapid maneuver. It was marked out by heavy armor, a great many small road wheels and side sheet panels covering the whole length of the hull. The Mk.IV version was among the most widespread and was built in large numbers. The characteristic access openings in the side panels and the broken-up fenders are precisely where thin metal stands out most against plastic.
A basic set does not call for a complete workshop, but without a bending tool, or at least a steel ruler and a fresh blade, the long side sheet panels will not bend straight. Make the bend on the edge of the ruler in one movement along the whole length, not in sections. Pre-bend the small parts first and test-fit them dry to see whether they sit on the plastic base; photo-etched sets tend to be designed for particular moldings and a millimeter of difference is noticeable. For more complicated shapes a round tool comes in handy, such as ordinary round pliers or a drill bit held in the hand as a mandrel.
