A set of photo-etched parts in brass in 1:35 scale from the manufacturer Voyager Model, intended for detailing a plastic model of the German medium tank Pz.Kpfw.IV in the Ausf.J form, fitted with the narrow turret from the Panther Ausf.F. The set is cut for the Rye Field Model 5068 kit. It is not a model of a vehicle, but an accessory to one.
The Ausf.J was the last production form of the Pz.Kpfw.IV, simplified to save production time and material. The turret of the Panther Ausf.F, known as the narrow turret, had a narrower front section and a different arrangement of the sight. Joining the chassis of the Pz.Kpfw.IV with this turret is a rendering of a late design study that never reached series production, so the model rests on technical interest rather than on the documented combat service of a particular machine.
Because the set covers two different parts of the vehicle, it pays to sort the parts from the start according to whether they belong on the hull or on the turret, and to build in sub-assemblies. Photo-etched metal is cut with sheet metal scissors or with a scalpel on a hard surface, the edges are sanded down and the surface degreased with alcohol before gluing. Lead the bends in a bending tool, and on long parts along the whole length at once, so that the edge does not go wavy. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue; the gel variety gives you time to align the part. Undercoat the brass with a primer for metal, otherwise the top color flakes off on the edges. Thin fenders and covers in photo-etched metal will stand a slight bend as well, which looks credible on a model.
It is an accessory set, not a kit. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
