About product

Barrel with a mantlet for the Pz.Sfl.IVb 1:35 (Voyager Model)

The set replaces the plastic barrel of the light field howitzer of 10.5 cm caliber and adds a matching mantlet to it. Metal holds an accurate shape and the barrel has a genuinely drilled muzzle. The set does not hold a model and assumes a kit of this vehicle already bought. The barrel is intended for the Dragon 6475 kit.

The real subject

Pz.Sfl.IVb is the designation of the German self-propelled carrier of the light field howitzer of 10.5 cm caliber on a shortened chassis derived from the Pz.Kpfw.IV medium tank. The howitzer was seated in an open turret and the vehicle was to serve as mobile artillery support. Only a small number were built, so relatively few photographs of the period have survived and building such a model is an unusual theme for a collector.

The mantlet and the axis of the barrel

On vehicles with an open turret the mantlet is one of the first details to catch the eye. A plastic mantlet tends to be deformed by production already and the hole for the barrel is as a rule larger than it should be. The replacement part solves that problem and at the same time guarantees that the barrel sits on the axis. So when fitting, seat the mantlet first, check that it is square to the front wall and only then glue the barrel in.

Painting metal

Degrease the metal parts and spray them with a primer meant for metal, otherwise the paint does not hold. Apply the basic shade thinly, so that the edges do not get filled. Metal is rewarding for a dry brush and graphite polishing of the edges, because the base is hard. A dark wash suits the recesses of the mantlet; darken the muzzle with pigment.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers building less usual German self-propelled artillery equipment
  • Builders bothered by a deformed plastic mantlet and a blanked-off muzzle
  • More experienced modelers working with metal replacement parts

These are parts for a kit you have already bought. The model, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

It is not. This is a replacement barrel with a mantlet for a kit of the self-propelled howitzer you have already bought.

Seat and align the mantlet first, check that it is square and only then glue the barrel in. You will not reshape a metal part later.

With cyanoacrylate in small drops applied with a wire. Cement for plastic does not hold on metal.
