About product

HMS Lord Clive (1:350, Hobby Boss)

An injection-molded plastic kit of the British monitor HMS Lord Clive in 1:350 scale from Hobby Boss. It is a new mold capturing an unusual coastal fighting ship of the Royal Navy of the First World War. The box contains finely shaped parts, photo-etched accessories, decals and a stand. The hull is split into two parts and completed with a separate deck, which makes building as well as painting easier. Check the exact contents against the enclosed instructions.

The real subject

HMS Lord Clive belonged to the class of coastal monitors launched in 1915 and built purposely for shelling targets on land. It carried a pair of heavy 305 mm (12-inch) guns in a single armored turret and, thanks to its shallow draft and broad hull, it could operate close to the shore, where the big battleships did not venture. The monitors were slow and unwieldy, but their main value was destructive fire against targets on land. During the First World War HMS Lord Clive shelled German fortifications and positions along the Belgian coast in the English Channel in support of ground operations.

Building and painting tips

Fit the split hull and the deck together and sand the seams carefully. Bond the fine photo-etched parts (railings, booms) with super glue. Apply the gray naval camouflage with an airbrush, bring out the details of the deck and the superstructure with a dark wash and add discreet traces of rust and service. The wooden surfaces of the deck come to life with a dry brush. The finished model goes on display on the enclosed stand.
