This is not a kit but an aftermarket accessory. The thin wood veneer with a pre-printed pattern of deck planks has an adhesive back and is glued over the plastic deck of your model. The set is cut for the Hasegawa 40082 kit; check before you buy that this is your release, because the outline of the deck differs between releases.
Heian Maru was built as a large ship with spacious, fairly open decks, interrupted by cargo hatches and the bases of handling equipment. An extensive continuous area of wood looks attractive once it is glued down, but without weathering it reads as flat; it lacks depth. The solution is simple and even a beginner can manage it: seal the surface with a thin coat of matte varnish first and only then apply a heavily thinned wash in a darker shade. It runs by capillary action into the pre-printed seams between the planks by itself and draws the laying out. Wipe the excess off with a cloth always drawn along the planks, not across them: cross strokes leave smears that are conspicuous in 1:350 scale.
Around the cargo hatches, the feet of the cranes and the bases of the superstructure you will need to trim the overhangs with a sharp knife run right along the edge of the plastic part. Work in small sections and keep checking that the veneer is not stretched over an edge anywhere: it is at circular bases that a ripple forms most easily. Level and degrease the plastic base before gluing, otherwise the edges will lift in time.
This is an accessory for a plastic kit, not a standalone model. The kit, paints, varnishes and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
