An accessory for modelers who want a real wooden deck on their model instead of painted plastic. The veneer is cut to fit the decks of the battleship Yamato in 1:350 scale and carries its own wood grain, so on a finished model it looks different from even the best painted surface. The Coal Black shade is from the dark part of the palette and suits a case where you want the deck rather darkened; it cannot be confused with the lighter variants, so choose according to the effect the model is to have.

The real subject

Yamato was a Japanese battleship, the largest ship of her kind ever built. On a model in 1:350 scale the decks take up a large part of the visible area, and it is therefore on them that it is decided whether the model looks convincing.

Usage tips

Lay the deck only onto a finished, painted and perfectly cured hull: veneer will not stand later sanding. First lay the parts out dry, check whether the cutouts for the superstructure and hatches fit, and only then seat them permanently, always from the center toward the edges, so that no ripple forms anywhere. Trim the overhangs with a new, really sharp scalpel; a blunt blade tears wood. It is advisable to fix the surface with a matte varnish, which protects the veneer and unifies the sheen; apply dry pigments only sparingly after that, so that the wood grain stays visible.
