About product

Liberty Ship SS Jeremiah O'Brien 1:350 (Trumpeter)

Injection-molded plastic kit of the American Liberty type cargo ship from Trumpeter in 1:350 scale. The hull is split, so the model can be built either as a full hull for the stand or as a waterline version. In the box you will find a finely shaped hull and superstructures, cargo hatch covers, lifeboats, decals and a stand with a nameplate. It is a rewarding model of a manageable size of an important ship of Allied logistics.

The real subject

The Liberty ships were the backbone of the Allied sea convoys in the Second World War. They were built in large series with incredible speed, using prefabricated, welded construction, to replace the tonnage sunk by submarines. SS Jeremiah O'Brien was completed in 1943 and is one of the few surviving ships of the type. She took part in the Normandy landings and survives to this day as a seagoing museum ship. She was a plain, rugged cargo ship with a single steam engine and modest defensive armament.

Building and painting tips

First decide between the full-hull and the waterline version, because that also affects the choice of stand. Sand the hull and deck joints carefully and glue them with thin cement for plastic. The deck fittings, cranes and masts are greatly brought to life by aftermarket photo-etched railings and ladders, which are not included in the box. Paint with an airbrush over a good base; naval gray with a dark lower hull works well, and light panel highlighting and restrained weathering will bring out the riveted and welded surfaces. Apply the decals over a gloss clear coat and seal them with a matte one.

Who the model is for

  • For modelers interested in Allied naval logistics of the Second World War
  • For collectors of ships in a single 1:350 scale
  • For builders who want a rewarding hull that also takes photo-etch well
  • Suitable for moderately advanced modelers too, thanks to the straightforward build

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Yes. The hull is split, so you can choose between the full hull on a stand and the waterline version for a diorama with a water surface.

The basic box is injection-molded plastic with decals and a stand. Photo-etched railings and ladders are sold separately as an accessory and refine the model considerably.

It was a mass-produced, quickly built Allied cargo ship of the Second World War. SS Jeremiah O'Brien is one of the few survivors and is still seaworthy as a museum ship.
