About product

Aircraft carrier Shokaku, outbreak of war version, 1:350, Fujimi

An injection-molded plastic kit in 1:350 scale from the ship range of the Japanese manufacturer Fujimi. The subject is the aircraft carrier Shokaku of the Imperial Japanese Navy in the form corresponding to the outbreak of the war in the Pacific. According to the name, 63 carrier aircraft are included in the box, which on a model of this kind substantially changes the finished scene, because a filled flight deck is the main visual surface of the whole model. The 1:350 scale means a large, easily read model with room for detail on the superstructures and the deck.

The real subject

The Shokaku was the lead ship of a pair of large aircraft carriers that the Imperial Japanese Navy completed in 1941. Compared with the older types she had a longer hull, more powerful machinery and a greater air group capacity, which gave her higher speed and greater range. The layout matched the Japanese standard of the day: a continuous flight deck, an island with the bridge on the starboard side, elevators between the decks and hangars under the flight deck. The ship took part in the operations of the first war years in the Pacific and was sunk in 1944. The configuration described as the state at the outbreak of the war corresponds to the armament and appearance from the time of her first deployment, not to later modifications.

Building and painting tips

Decide on the way you will display it first, because the hull is assembled accordingly. Paint the flight deck only after the superstructures are finished, so that paint from the other parts is not carried onto the wooden surface. Spray the small aircraft while they are still on the sprue and separate them only before gluing them down, otherwise they are hard to handle. Railings and fine structures are rewarding in this scale for adding a photo-etched set, but that is not included in the box. Thin coats of paint from an airbrush and a fine wash into the recesses suit the hull, so that the riveted and welded surfaces stand out. Finally even the sheen out with a matte varnish and set the model on a stand or on a base with a water surface.

Who the model is for

  • For collectors of ship models in a single 1:350 scale.
  • For modelers interested in naval aviation and aircraft carriers.
  • For advanced builders who want to add photo-etched parts and a wooden deck to the model.
  • As a striking centerpiece for a display case, given the size of the model.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
