This set is an accessory for a model of the battleship New Jersey in 1:350 scale, not a kit of the ship. The year 1982 in the name determines the configuration: the ship returned to service that year after a modernization, and she differs from her wartime form in superstructure, electronics and armament. The set is cut for the kit from Tamiya.
USS New Jersey BB-62 was one of the American fast battleships of the Iowa class, with main armament of 406 mm caliber in three triple turrets. She was the first of the whole class to go through a modernization at the turn of the 1970s and 1980s, in which she was given boxed launchers for guided missiles, new sensors and close-in defense systems. The result is an unmistakable silhouette where Cold War electronics sit on a classic gunnery hull.
Cut the photo-etched parts off with a scalpel on a hard surface and make the bends in a bender, so that the edges come out straight. Glue with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue) applied with a pin in minute amounts. Leave the railings, antennas and fine mast fittings until the very end, otherwise you will bend them while handling the model. It pays to lighten the uniform gray expanse of the hull with very light panel highlighting. Always a primer on the metal parts first.
