The USS Salem, with the hull designation CA-139, is an American heavy cruiser of the Des Moines class. The ships of this class belonged to the last generation of large gun cruisers of the US Navy, and their main armament was made up of turrets with 8-inch guns. The Salem has been preserved and is a museum ship today, which is an advantage for modelers — documentation on it is available and the model can be built from the real subject. In the same scale Very Fire also offers the sister ship Des Moines, so a pair can be built.
With ships in 1:350 scale decide right at the start whether you are building the full hull or the version cut at the waterline into a base with a water surface. It is practical to paint the decks and superstructures separately and to join them only once dry, otherwise sharp transitions between shades are hard to mask. Seat the small gun turrets and boats right at the end, so that they do not snap off while handling. A dark wash into the panel lines and fine highlighting of the edges suits the vertical areas; the decks will be brought to life by sparing drybrushed highlighting of the planking. Try the hull on its stand dry in advance, so that it sits without strain.
