About product

The real subject

USS Smith was the lead ship of the class of the same name of American destroyers, which entered service at the end of the first decade of the twentieth century. They were the first American destroyers driven by steam turbines, which at the time was a decisive step: a turbine gave a ship a higher speed and a smoother running than the reciprocating engines used until then. They were small ships with a low freeboard, a slender hull and a row of funnels, built to escort a fleet formation and to make torpedo attacks. The armament was made up of light 76 mm guns and torpedo tubes. In the First World War the ships of this class served on patrol and escort duty.

What the model offers

In 1:350 scale a destroyer of this size comes out as a small ship, on which a great deal depends on the fineness of the superstructures, the funnels and the railings. That is exactly why it is rewarding as a counterpart to large ships in a display case: only beside a cruiser or a battleship does it become clear how slight these early destroyers were.

  • The destroyer USS Smith with the hull number DD-17 in 1:350 scale
  • The subject is the lead ship of the first American class with turbine propulsion
  • Worth rounding out with photo-etch, above all railings and ladders
  • A waterline build or a full hull, according to the base chosen

Building and painting tips

Look the parts over before gluing and cut the excess material away with a sharp blade a little clear of the part, then sand the rest off. Wash and degrease the model before painting. Choose the paint scheme according to the period you want to capture, because these ships changed their appearance several times during their service; look for reference on the fittings and the markings in the instructions with the kit. Thin elements such as masts and davits are easily lost in this scale, so glue them on only at the end of the build.

Who it is for

For ship modelers who collect in 1:350 scale and for anyone interested in the US Navy of the early twentieth century. Paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

An American destroyer with the hull number DD-17 and the lead ship of the class of the same name. They were the first American destroyers with steam turbines.

In 1:350 scale it is a small ship with fine parts. A less experienced modeler will manage it, but tweezers, a sharp blade and patience with the thin elements are worth having.

In this scale photo-etched railings, ladders and fine aerials show the most. The accessories are not included in the package.

Cut the excess material away with a sharp blade a little clear of the part and sand it, then wash and degrease the model. Glue the thin elements on only at the end of the build.
