What a fence will do in a scene

A fence is among the elements that give a scene order. It will bound a plot, separate a road from a yard, cover the edge of a base and keep the viewer's gaze inside the scene. At the same time it serves as a reliable scale: as soon as a scene has an object of ordinary human size beside a vehicle or a figure, the whole scene starts to come across credibly. It comes into its own in rural and suburban scenes, at field positions and as a background behind equipment.

Building and painting tips

• Cut the surplus material off with a sharp blade a little way from the part and sand the remainder down carefully.
• Wash and degrease the parts before painting, so that the paint holds.
• The procedure for gluing and the recommended glue are to be found in the manufacturer's instructions.
• Wood looks better in layers: a basic brown tone, a dark glaze into the gaps and a drybrush on the edges.
• A different shade on the individual boards and a few leaning or missing pieces will make a real structure of the fence rather than a series-production element.
• Dirty the bottom of the fence with soil from the base, so that the fence looks set in and not merely laid against the grass.
