About product

Clyde 1940 1:400, a diorama set, Mirage Hobby

A set of injection-molded plastic ship models in 1:400 scale from the Polish maker Mirage Hobby. Unlike an ordinary kit with a single model, this is a combined set whose theme is a particular historical scene, the anchorage in the mouth of the river Clyde in Scotland in 1940. The set is therefore aimed at building a whole rather than a single vessel. Everything is supplied unassembled and unpainted; the paints and the glue are not included, even though the product is sold as a set.

The real subject

At the end of August 1939 three Polish destroyers left the Baltic Sea and moved to Great Britain. From September 1939 they then operated under the command of the Royal Navy and became the core of the Polish Navy in exile. The mouth of the river Clyde in Scotland was one of their main anchorages: it was a sheltered stretch of water with developed shipbuilding facilities, from which British and Allied ships sailed to escort convoys. The Grom class destroyers, built in the second half of the 1930s, were among the fast and heavily armed vessels of their kind in their day. During the war they took part in escort and patrol operations in the North Atlantic and off the Norwegian coast.

Building and painting tips

With a multi-part set it pays to build step by step: finish and paint the individual vessels first, and only then deal with the composition of the scene. A small scale forgives fewer mistakes in surface preparation, so clean the flash off the parts, sand the hull joints carefully and prime the whole thing. Paint the superstructures and the decks separately and glue them on only once they are dry. The surface of the water can be made from acrylic paste or clear resin tinted to the gray-green of northern waters; the ripples are shaped with a brush in the paste while it is still tacky. Railings and ship's cables can be added with photo-etched parts and fine fishing line. Finally, pull the whole thing together with a fine wash and a matte varnish.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of naval dioramas in 1:400 scale
  • Anyone interested in the Polish Navy and the Allied forces of the Second World War
  • Modelers who want to build a scene rather than just a single model
  • Collectors of warships in a single scale

The models are supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is a multi-part set, so more than one vessel. The manufacturer gives the exact composition on the packaging and in the instructions.

It does not. Here the word set means several models on one theme, not a starter package with paints. The paints, the glue and a primer have to be bought separately.

Working the scene up is usually something the modeler prepares themselves. The water can be made from acrylic paste or clear resin on a board of your own.

Building the models themselves is manageable, but finishing them into a scene calls for patience and basic experience of diorama techniques.
