This kit of the ZIS-16 bus from AVD Models covers, in 1:43 scale, one of the most interestingly shaped vehicles of Soviet interwar production. The type is a rewarding one for a collection precisely because it differs at first glance from the angular buses that came after the war. 1:43 is the established car scale, so the finished model holds its proportion well beside passenger cars and trucks of the same period.
The ZIS-16 came about at the Moscow ZIS works in the second half of the 1930s and was built on the lengthened chassis of the ZIS-5 truck. Its rounded front and raked windows were a tribute to the aerodynamic fashion of the day, which ran through the whole motor industry, even though on a city bus it brought aesthetic rather than technical gains. The vehicles ran mainly in the large cities, and some of them were adapted during the war for ambulance and rear-area duties. It is precisely the combination of an elegant shape and a hard fate that makes this type a subject collectors remember.
Aerodynamic shapes are unforgiving of irregularities, because light slides along a curved surface and every step on it stands out. Before painting, then, go over the sides and the front with fine polishing and check them against the light. A two-tone scheme with a broken dividing line is typical of this vehicle and is best managed with flexible masking tape bent into a curve, rather than by assembling straight strips. Mask the raked windows with shapes cut out in advance, because you will not paint them back afterward without it showing. The wheel arches and the fenders will take a light dusting.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
