A masking set for the Bell UH-1D in 1:48 scale, the EXPERT level

A set of self-adhesive masks of kabuki paper from the New Ware marque, cut for a model of the Bell UH-1D helicopter in 1:48 scale. The EXPERT designation is the highest of the levels into which the marque divides its masking sets, so it covers more than just the main glazing of the cabin.

What the masks are for

Framing of a cabin drawn with a brush is the most frequent reason why an otherwise successful model does not stand up. Pre-cut masks of thin paper with a slightly adhesive layer seat exactly into the engraved lines and come off without remains of glue once the spraying is done. The result is a sharp edge between the glazing and the frame of a kind nobody achieves freehand, and that even on intricate surfaces.

The real subject

The UH-1D was the transport version of the famous Huey with a lengthened cabin and more room for the soldiers being carried. It became renowned in Vietnam and a range of European armies operated it on a large scale in license production, so a really varied palette of coloring suggests itself for a model, from uniform olive to striking rescue schemes.

Procedure and recommendations

• Degrease the glazing before sticking the masks on and let it dry completely
• Transfer the masks with tweezers and press them down with a wooden toothpick
• Spray the shade of the interior first, and only then the outer color
• Take the templates off while the paint is only dry, not hardened
