About product

The McDonnell F-101A Voodoo in 1:144 scale from Valom

The kit comes from a Czech workshop that has long devoted itself to types neglected by the large manufacturers, and it extends the Voodoo range with the basic fighter version. The smaller scale means a sensible size for the finished model, but the parts are injection molded by short-run technology, so a more careful fit is to be reckoned with.

The real subject

The Voodoo originally came about as a long-range escort fighter for strategic bombers, but it lost that role before it was finished and McDonnell reworked the aircraft into a tactical machine. The F-101A version entered service in 1957 and carried above all strike armament for a fast attack from low altitude. The pair of J57 engines with afterburners made it one of the fastest aircraft of its day, but the long fuselage with the horizontal surfaces set high gave it a reputation as a machine that does not forgive errors in flying. The reconnaissance RF-101 and the two-seat F-101B interceptor later derived from the airframe of the Voodoo.

Building and painting tips

With a short-run mold it pays to put the parts together dry first and to sand the mating surfaces down. Consider weighting the cockpit and the nose gear, otherwise the model is apt to sit down on its tail. The metallic look of the smooth surfaces is best captured by lacquer metallic paints applied over a smoothed undercoat; the decals then need a gloss intermediate coat, so that no silvery edge appears beneath them.

Who the model is for

  • for collectors of small scales and Cold War equipment
  • for modelers who do not mind a little fine-tuning of the parts
  • for owners of display cases where there is no room for a large scale
  • for anyone interested in the US Air Force of the 1950s

The box contains the parts for assembly; the finished look is up to the modeler, and the paints and the glue are obtained separately.

FAQ

Short-run parts call for sanding and a trial assembly, so it suits modelers with a few finished kits behind them rather.

It is the single-seat tactical variant. The reconnaissance RF-101 carried cameras in the nose and the F-101B was a two-seat interceptor.

With an aircraft with a nose gear and a long fuselage the weight pays off, otherwise the model risks sitting down on its tail.
