The USS Wasp was an American aircraft carrier of the Essex class, which after conversion the US Navy listed under the hull designation CVS-18, that is as a carrier intended above all for anti-submarine warfare. The deck of such a ship is a rewarding motif in itself: the pattern of lines, numbers and markings on it reveals where a model comes from without your having to build a whole diorama.
The supporting part is an acrylic board 3 mm thick measuring 410 x 270 mm, that is 41 x 27 cm, with a color motif of a ship's deck. The board is stiff enough not to bend under a model. The model is simply stood on it; no gluing or other work is needed. The motif is worked in 1:48 scale, so one model of a carrier aircraft fits onto the area with plenty of deck around it. The base suits displaying a finished model on a shelf, in a cabinet and at a competition, where it gives the aircraft a piece of its setting with no work on building a scene.
