A portal crane was part of the equipment of airfield workshops just as much as wrenches and jacks. The structure is simple and functional: two legs in the shape of a gateway, a horizontal beam between them and on it a traveling hoist with a hook. The load is lifted straight up, runs along the beam to the side and is lowered beside the machine. Without such a crane no work on an aircraft could be done that required taking off an engine or moving a heavy unit, because the muscle power of the crew was not enough for it. In period photographs from field airfields the crane usually stands right over a dismantled nose.
A model of a portal crane in 1:48 scale, that is in the size that fits models of aircraft in this scale. It is a standalone build, not a part to be glued on: the assembled crane forms the center of a scene and around it tools, drums and figures of mechanics can be arranged.
Go through the assembly procedure according to the manufacturer's instructions, because with a structure of beams the order of the parts decides whether everything lines up in the end. Glue on a flat board and check the right angles as you go; a crane glued crookedly is apparent at first glance. Cut the excess material away with a sharp blade a little away from the part and sand the remainder, and wash and degrease the surface before painting. The structure is brought to life by wear in the places where the crane was worked with: rubbing on a leg, a handle worn by hands, traces of a rope on the beam.
