A sheet 1:48 covering a pair of Mirage IIIE machines with the designation Regent Papa, with which the La Fayette fighter squadron celebrated seventy years of its tradition in 1986.
Responsibility details are not available.
The tradition of the La Fayette name reaches back to the spring of 1916, when an escadrille made up of American volunteers formed within the French Air Force. The seventieth anniversary therefore fell in 1986, and the unit EC 2/4 marked it then with a finish on its Mirage IIIE machines. That the French brand counts the anniversary from 1916 is confirmed by another item in the same series from this maker, which gives the span of the years 1916 to 2016 for the centenary.
What is unusual about this sheet is that it is aimed at two aircraft at once. An anniversary finish in the French Air Force is often divided between a pair of machines, which then fly as a pair at displays and over ceremonial parades. The designation Regent Papa was carried by both machines and joined them into one whole. The Mirage IIIE was already a veteran in the middle of the 1980s and ended with this unit two years later, so the anniversary caught the type practically at the close of its career.
The 1980s were a golden period for French anniversary finishes. The artwork concentrated on the vertical tail surface and on the area of the nose; the rest of the airframe stayed in ordinary camouflage, so a model can be built in the usual shade and the festive part added only with the decals.
Two subjects mean two sets of fuselage numbers, which are easily mixed up. It pays to cut the sheet into groups first and to put them aside separately. The delta wing of the Mirage has pronounced panel lines on its upper surface, over which large motifs will not settle without the help of a softener and gentle pressing with a cotton swab.
