600 gallon external tanks with pivot pylons for the FB-111, 1:48 scale will complete a model with the typical load under a variable-geometry wing. The name gives two pieces.
Responsibility details are not available.
The set brings large-capacity fuel tanks complete with the pylons that, on an aircraft with a variable-geometry wing, rotated along with the movement of the wing. The name gives a volume of six hundred gallons, the application for the FB-111 and two pieces in the package. The box completes a kit you already have under way; on its own it does not make a model.
The wing of the aircraft swept back in flight so that the machine could manage both a slow takeoff with a large load and fast flight at low altitude. If a pylon had stayed fixed, the load carried would have turned across the airflow as the sweep angle grew. The designers therefore mounted the pylons on pivots: as the wing swept, they turned automatically so as to stay parallel with the longitudinal axis of the machine. On a model it is conspicuous and explains nicely how the whole mechanism worked.
First decide on the sweep angle at which you will build the model and turn the pylons to match; once the glue has dried you will no longer shift them. Sand the contact faces flat, otherwise the tank hangs askew and it shows at first glance. Make the joint with cyanoacrylate glue and strengthen it with a drop of the thicker variety. Unify the paintwork with the wing and pick out the transition between the pylon and the skin with only a faint shadow.
