About product

Eduard 1:48 A-1J SPACE, 3D Decals for the A-1J Cockpit

A set from the SPACE decal series by the Czech manufacturer Eduard, intended for a model of the Douglas A-1J Skyraider in 1:48 scale. The A-1J is the late single-seat version of this piston attack family, so the set is aimed at a different kit from the variants for the earlier forms. The items have a raised relief and their colors printed directly on the decal paper. Eduard carries several accessories with similar names for the same machine, and they are told apart by the exact designation of the series; this one is from the SPACE series.

What the set is for

Cockpit equipment in this scale is normally dealt with either by painting the plastic relief or with photo-etched parts, which have to be bent, glued and painted. The SPACE set skips both steps: you get the relief and the color in a single application. Applying it is straightforward: cut the item out, moisten the carrier paper beneath it without dipping the sheet in water, lift the item off with tweezers, settle it into a drop of PVA glue (white glue), press it down with a soft brush and let it dry without shifting it. A softener has no place in the procedure; it would attack the printed resin.

Pre-painted parts and painting

The whole set is finished at the factory and is not painted over; spraying over it with an opaque paint would hide the printing. The only thing to deal with is the sheen. A decal needs a smooth glossy area under it, otherwise air is trapped under the film and the edges turn white, but once dry that gloss is a nuisance, because a cockpit is supposed to be matte. The procedure is therefore always the same: a gloss varnish under the set, and once dry a matte varnish over the whole interior. The set is not surface-worked or sanded; abrasive paper would rub the printing off. Run any wash only around the items, not over them, and heavily thinned at that.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of the A-1J variant in 1:48 scale
  • Modelers who want a finished cockpit without bending and painting photo-etch
  • Those who know how to match a gloss base and a matte final varnish

This is an accessory, not a kit. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

Each set is cut for a different version of the Skyraider and so for a different kit. Choose by the variant given in the name, which has to match your model.

A gloss base keeps air from being trapped under the film and turning the edges white. The matte varnish at the end unifies the surface, because the inside of a cockpit is not supposed to be glossy.

No. Abrasive paper will rub the printing off and an opaque paint will hide it. The set is applied, varnished, and after that left alone.

It is not. It is an accessory for the cockpit; the base Skyraider kit in 1:48 scale has to be obtained separately.
