About product

American M1 helmet in the detail variant, 1:48 scale

The set contains a helmet for a figure in 1:48 scale, not a model or a whole figure. In 1:48 scale the helmet is a really small part, but all the more does it show when it has a thin edge and a cleanly cast bowl shape: on plastic figures the helmet tends to be cast in one piece with the head and the shape is therefore simplified. A variant of the same helmet without the detail designation is made as well; check the difference between them on the box.

The real subject

The M1 steel helmet is the American headgear introduced at the beginning of the 1940s. It is in two parts: an outer steel shell and a separate liner, which carries the fittings and can be worn on its own. The shape with its smooth, slightly flared edge is recognizable enough to place a figure with the US Army at once. The helmet stayed in service for long decades after the Second World War, so it suits postwar and later scenes as well.

Fitting, cleanup and painting

First separate the part from the casting block with a sharp blade or a fine saw as close to the part as possible and level the gate mark with a coarser abrasive paper. If the set is cast in resin, wash it in lukewarm water with detergent before painting to clear it of remains of mold release agent, and choose the glue according to the material: cyanoacrylate on resin, thin cement for plastic on plastic parts. Wet-sand resin and do so with respiratory protection.

In 1:48 scale paint the helmet very thinly, otherwise the edge of the rim will disappear. Lay a dark wash around the rim under the base olive shade and pick out the crown and the edge with a drybrush. Suggest scuffs only in spots; at this scale overdone weathering looks coarse. If you want the helmet as a prop set down, turn it so that the inside is visible and paint it in a different, lighter shade. At the end, unify the surface with a matte varnish.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers of American figures in 1:48 scale
  • Conversions of figures for aircraft and vehicle dioramas
  • Builders of scenes with equipment set down and props
  • Modelers for whom a helmet cast in one piece with the head will not do

This is an accessory for a figure, not a model on its own. The set is supplied unpainted; paints, glue and a figure are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The manufacturer makes both variants as separate items. Check the difference between them on the box.

No, the package contains the helmet. It contains no head and no figure.

It is small but manageable. The key is to paint thinly and keep the weathering in check: at this scale overdone scuffs come out as a coarse blotch.

Yes. The M1 helmet stayed in use for long decades after the Second World War.
