An accessory set of boxes for .50 caliber ammunition belts in the early form, in 1:48 scale. It is neither a vehicle kit nor an aircraft kit, but a small accessory used to enliven models, their surroundings and dioramas. The word early in the name refers to the older form of the box, which differs from the later standardized type in the shape of the lid and the catches, and which is therefore offered separately.
An ammunition box is one of the most universal props a modeler can have. The .50 caliber, that is 12.7 mm, was among the most widespread American armament of the Second World War and of the postwar years: a machine gun of this caliber was carried by armored vehicles, trucks, vessels and aircraft, and boxes with belts lay around all of them. On a model they can therefore sit on a fender, hang on a turret basket, stand beside a figure or form a pile on a base. In a diorama these are the details that give a scene its scale and believability.
It pays to paint the boxes separately from the model, while they are easily reachable from all sides. A metal box takes a darker base, fine edge highlighting and discreet traces of corrosion along the bottom edge. Lettering and markings on the sides of a box lift the impression of the whole markedly, so if you go for them, count on a fine brush or a decal. Try the arrangement on the model dry first, as boxes placed at random look more natural than a regular row.
