About product

Aires, engines for the B-17G Flying Fortress in 1:48 scale

This is a resin detail accessory that replaces the powerplants of a model of the four-engine B-17G bomber in 1:48 scale. It is not an aircraft model nor a part of one that could be built on its own. Castings from the Aires brand have finely rendered cylinder fins and individual items of engine accessory, that is details that an injection mold cannot deliver.

The real subject

The B-17G was the most numerously built version of the American four-engine Flying Fortress bomber. Power came from nine-cylinder radials with a turbocharger, housed in nacelles on the leading edge of the wing. The radial engine is exactly the rewarding subject for a model: the front view is clearly visible under the cowling, the individual cylinders cast shadows and the difference between a simplified plastic part and an honest casting is apparent at first glance. With a bomber the detail is moreover multiplied four times over, so the work pays off visually.

Usage tips

First wash the castings in warm soapy water because of the mold release residue. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw, proceed carefully around the thin cylinder fins and do the sanding wet with respiratory protection. Before gluing, do a dry fit inside the engine cowling: a resin part tends to be fuller than a plastic one, so it may be necessary to thin the inside of the nacelle. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). Painting is easier while the engine is out of the cowling: a base of dark steel or graphite paint, a wash in the recesses between the fins and fine dry highlighting of the edges create the impression of cast metal. The pushrods can be suggested with thin wire if the casting does not have them.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of four-engine bombers in 1:48 scale.
  • Modelers who want to show the engine with the cowling opened or removed.
  • More experienced builders used to resin and super glue.
  • Those finishing a model for a competition who are dealing with detail at first glance.

This is an accessory, not an aircraft model. Kits, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. The set contains the resin engines only, and you have to have the kit of your own.

As a rule a dry fit and thinning of the inside of the nacelle are necessary, because the resin part is fuller than the plastic one.

A dark steel base, a wash in the recesses between the fins and light dry highlighting of the edges. Mix metallic paint thoroughly, because the pigment settles to the bottom.

The exact number of engines and of the other parts is stated on the packaging.
