A detail set from Metallic Details. It is not an aircraft kit but an accessory: a set of resin castings that replace the simplified air intakes from the plastic kit. The castings have thin leading edges and a well-worked inner duct wall, which injection-molded plastic can hardly achieve in this place. The set allows the intakes to be assembled in two configurations.
On large models the air intakes are among the most visible places. Thick walls and visible mold seams on plastic parts spoil the impression at first glance, especially on a model of the size the B-1B has in 1:48 scale. The resin parts solve the problem with a single casting and save filling and sanding inside the duct, which is hard to reach.
The Rockwell B-1B Lancer is an American supersonic strategic bomber with a variable-geometry wing and four turbofan engines. Compared with the earlier B-1A prototype, the production version received fixed air intakes with a serpentine duct that hides the compressor blades and reduces the radar signature. It is exactly this shape that the set captures.
First wash the resin parts in lukewarm water with detergent to remove the mold release agent, otherwise the paint will not hold. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw or a cutting disc, do not snap them. They are bonded with cyanoacrylate glue; sand wet and wear respiratory protection. Dry-fit the part before gluing and adjust the opening in the plastic if necessary.
The set is an accessory; the model of the aircraft itself is not included in the package. The parts are supplied unpainted and glue and paints are not enclosed.
